Cleyrac (Charente) This damaged figure (probably hacked by puritans) is in the wall of the 12th century church, to the left of the entrance, and is remarkably like the later Insular figures in its crudity, the splayed legs with out-turned feet, and the framed false-relief. If it is, in fact, crude, rustic Romanesque, it anticipates the Insular figures. But its position, unusual if not unique in France, suggests that it is a sheela-na-gig which has strayed.
