A bishop looks on (?) while scuilptors work.
On a pulpit at Minturno (Lazio, Italy)
an ecclesiastic apparently looks on while a sinner is devoured by a hellish
beast.
On the other side of the pulpit another beast swallows another sinner.
Pulpits are a feature in Romanesque Italy. An acrobatic, unsexed Luxuria
is depicted on a pulpit at Gropina,
also in Lazio.
Minturno photos by Martin M. Miles.
On a corbel at Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (Tarn-et-Garonne).
a hellish beast's head is upside down, and the Rich and Lascivious Woman
is descending feet-first,
revealing a large circular vulva as she does so.
Detail of the pulpit at Gropina (Lazio), which also shows a matching two-tailed
mermaid
with luxuriant hair.
These two figures also echo pre-Romanesque images of Earth and Sea.
