Ballyvourney (Cork)
This figure, carved in false relief on a window-top of the old church
has been hacked, so it was considered to be exhibitionist - but otherwise
shows no sheela-like characteristics. It more resembles the Lough
Erne figures of White Island and Lusty More Island, and might well
be a representation of Saint Gobnait of Ballyvourney, a Christianised
fertility-goddess whose symbol was the bee.
The figure is touched during the túras
or Pattern of St Gobnait on the eleventh of February.
