This photo was taken during a flood of the river Boyne.
  The figure has been almost effaced not just by whitewashing
  but by traditional knife-whetting by customers waiting for their corn to be 
  ground. 

  Many years after the above photograph was taken, 
  new owners of the mill removed the figure and effectively but gently cleaned 
  it during reconstruction.
  Some whitewash ineluctably remains.
